The
National Transport Workers’ Union (NTWU) and SMRT signed a memorandum of understanding on 7 September 2016 that will see better working terms for SMRT’s employees.
Under the new terms, bus captains under SMRT will see a $325 increase in their starting basic salary, which is in line with terms offered by other three public transport operators in Singapore. There will also be a new team-based incentive to encourage the various job functions of the transport operator to work together smoothly to achieve performance targets.
The re-employment age will also be extended to 69, which will give the company’s older workers more job security.
NTWU Executive Secretary Melvin Yong said: “We are pleased that SMRT made considerable efforts to match the employment packages offered by the other public transport operators. Moving ahead, NTWU will continue to work closely with the company to take care of the well-being of our mature workers through programmes such as health checks.”
