As the voice for private hire vehicle drivers, the National Private Hire Vehicles Association (NPHVA) regularly engages various driver communities and other stakeholders to stay in tune with the latest industry developments, as well as concerns relating to the sustainability of drivers’ livelihoods.
Following the change of Uber’s incentive scheme which was communicated to drivers on Saturday, 1 October 2016, we have since received feedback from numerous drivers who expressed concern over the change. The new scheme took effect on Monday, 3 October 2016. Generally, these drivers feel that the two-day notice period given to them is insufficient for them to adjust their driving strategies in order to benefit from the new scheme. There are also some drivers who are waiting to see how the scheme will impact them.
Specifically, there are certain groups of drivers who are affected by this change, namely new drivers who have just committed to driving for Uber, basing their decision on the previous incentive scheme and earning models. Such drivers have either entered into rental contracts or converted their own vehicle for private hire usage.
NPHVA is contacting Uber to request for a meeting, to surface such feedback and work together closely, as Uber continues to fine-tune the incentive scheme moving forward. NPHVA hopes that Uber will be able to give due consideration to the plight of such drivers, and that sufficient lead time will be factored in for future changes so that drivers are better able to adapt accordingly.
NPHVA is cognizant of the evolving nature of the private hire industry, and urge existing, new, and potential drivers to apprise themselves of the requirements to stay ahead in this dynamic industry. As incentive schemes, earning models and advancements in technology remain ever-changing, drivers in this industry should read the fine print of their contracts carefully and be fully aware of the risks and pay-offs involved.
To this end, NPHVA stands ready to help drivers compete fairly and maintain a sustainable livelihood. This includes holding workshops that educate drivers on key topics such as licensing, contractual, tax and CPF issues. We will also continue to engage industry stakeholders to further surface drivers’ individual and collective issues and help them achieve a viable driving career.
