Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, former Singapore President S R Nathan, NTUC Secretary-General Lim Swee Say and a host of Pioneer Leaders past and present celebrated the late founding NTUC President Ho See Beng through the launch of a book chronicling his life and legacy.
The official book launch of “Ho See Beng, The Washerwoman’s Son”, took place on 5 December at the NTUC Centre Auditorium.
With an impressive guest list of around 700, the event commemorated the life and contributions made by Mr Ho as a Trade Union Activist and Parliamentarian to both the NTUC and to Singapore – past, present and future.
Workers’ Champion
NTUC Secretary-General Lim Swee Say called Mr Ho “a champion of the workers”, talking about his contributions to the Singapore brand of Tripartism, and his career in the Labour Movement (LM) – including his initiating the conversion of daily-rated workers to monthly-rated staff.
He attributed Singapore’s high unemployment rate along with its current non-confrontational activism to Mr Ho’s influence on the LM. SG Lim said the book will help younger generations of Singaporean leaders as well as workers and the general public to know and understand Mr Ho better and in turn inspire many to emulate him in creating a Better Future, A Better Singapore.
A Gift to NTUC
The book was officially gifted to NTUC by Mr Nathan to NTUC President Diana Chia.
“Ho See Beng, The Washerwoman’s Son” is available for purchase at $28 at your nearest bookstore from 6 December 2014.
