For the last 50 years, it has been the union that has been looking after the welfare and benefits of workers who may have played a key role in the public housing needs of Singaporeans.
On 21 October 2017, HDB Staff Union and HDB management held the HDB and HDBSU Joint Bursary Award and HDBSU Long Membership cum Retirement Award ceremony.
The event honoured 03 retiring staff from HDB who have been long standing union members with HDBSU and also saw the presentation of bursaries to children of union members currently employed with HDB.
According to HDBSU, the retiring staff received a gold coin.
Retirement Awards
One of the retiring unionists was 63-year-old Lim Poh Muay (pictured above). The senior estates manager began working with HDB in 1981 after a stint with another statutory board.
Mdm Lim has seen how operations have evolved from being manual to highly computerised.
“I started off as a cashier, and those days for one payment, you have to make an entry on one card. Subsequently when things were computerised, you only have to do the collection of the payment and that’s all. The changes are fantastic,” she said.
She is also a firm believer in training and upgrading at the workplace.
“Personally, I have been through a lot of training. Whatever opportunity or courses that are made available to us, I will always make an effort to attend. This is to enhance our performance and knowledge and for personal gain also. HDB and the union have been very generous in granting staff time-off to attend training and engaging us in getting our opinions on whether we are happy on the job and what improvements we would like to see,” elaborated Mdm Lim.
Bursaries
The event also saw 123 students from primary to tertiary level receive bursary awards from HDBSU worth nearly $38,200.
While HDB management presented six bursaries to students pursuing a degree at a local university.
“We are grateful to HDB management for their collaborative approach to match our efforts in reaching out to see to the educational needs of the recipients,” said K Sampath, chairman of HDBSU’s Mutual Aid Welfare Secretariat.
