When the Todo Todo youth career support platform was first launched in April 2017 by NTUC and the People’s Association, it aimed to engage youths on their career journeys through coaching, mentoring, workshops and talks.

One of the initiative’s highlights is the Young NTUC Youth Career Network (YCN), where youths can embark on a mentorship ‘journey’ with volunteer career guides and seek career support from volunteer career coaches.

Young NTUC has now introduced a Youth Career Network Development Framework to help the more than 200 volunteer career guides and coaches within its ranks expand and deepen their skills so that they can better support youths in their career journey.

This was announced on the sidelines of the Todo Todo Skills Marketplace @ South West event at Westgate on 6 April 2018.

Strengthening the Youth Career Network

“These volunteers will have access to training for some 10 competencies, including coaching and impactful communication. The framework will also provide leadership opportunities for young professionals to manage and lead changes for the network of guides. This will encourage volunteers to develop and enhance their skillsets and commit themselves to higher professional standards to better support our young workers and potential job seekers,” said Low Yen Ling, Mayor of South West District, who was guest-of-honour.

The framework will also identify ‘Star’ and ‘Champion’ volunteers who have exhibited a commitment and desire to work more closely with Young NTUC to develop the Youth Career Network programme.

“We have a vested interest in adding value to our volunteers. While we would like to encourage them to contribute and pay-it-forward [as career guides and coaches], we also want to multiply the talents that we have. With this framework in place, we will be able to better recruit volunteers at different levels, prepare them to do an even better job with our mentees,” added Young NTUC Executive Secretary Desmond Choo.

The Skills Marketplace

For the 1,000 youths and jobseekers that attended Todo Todo Skills Marketplace @ South West, more than 20 employers offering some 300 positions in food and beverage, hospitality, retail and logistics sectors were on hand to share details on the available opportunities.

This was complemented by workshops such as profiling oneself in an increasingly digital world and talks on the hottest trends and career prospects in the food and beverage industry and retail sectors by speakers such as Andy Oh, Gong Cha’s chief operating officer and Harishankar Vijayarajan, the executive vice-president and chief business officer at Lazada (Singapore).
