The effectiveness of an Industry Transformation Map (ITM) lies in how companies and workers can better seize new opportunities in the economy.
In a closed-door dialogue session with the Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF) council and members, NTUC Secretary-General (SG) Chan Chun Sing underscored the important role that trade associations and chambers (TACs) like SMF can play in driving innovation, building capabilities and helping companies and their workers reap the benefits of enhanced productivity and greater competitiveness.
“Organisations like SMF play an important role in our efforts to transform the economy and help our businesses seize opportunities ahead,” said SG Chan.
He urged SMF and its members to work closely with NTUC and government partners to translate Government initiatives and schemes into tangible outcomes for their businesses and the workforce.
To help companies cope with manpower challenges and attract talent, SG Chan suggested that SMF can work together with NTUC to develop internship programmes for small and medium-sized enterprises to help nurture the interest of young workers in the various industries.
This could be done through collaborations with institutes of higher learning, Young NTUC, NTUC’s e2i (Employment and Employability Institute) and Workforce Singapore.
