NTUC Foodfare has come up with a pilot programme where you can pay-it-forward by buying meals for needy residents in Pasir Ris.

The Gift-A-Meal Programme allows you to donate meals at $3.50 each when you buy food at the Pasir Ris Hawker Centre. This could be done through the Foodfare mobile app or directly through the hawkers.

Low-income families can then access these “gifts” at any Foodfare locations.

The initiative was launched by NTUC Secretary-General (SG) Ng Chee Meng at the official opening of the Pasir Hawker Center on 14 July 2018.

To kick-start the programme, Foodfare has donated 1,000 meals. In a media release, Foodfare said: “We hope the programme will gain traction with our patrons to support the community while they enjoy dining with us.”

Moving forward, the social enterprise plans to expand the initiative to benefit more low-income communities.

At the official opening ceremony, Foodfare also reaffirmed its social mission of making affordable and healthy meals accessible to everyone in Singapore through their over 100 touchpoints and by serving 85 million meals a year.

“As the cost of living rises in Singapore, many Singaporeans are concerned about having to cope with the basic necessity,” said SG Ng.

He added that all NTUC social enterprises like Foodfare play a crucial role in helping to regulate the cost of living.

“We take this role seriously and will work hard to ensure that we continue to enable Singaporeans to live better and more meaningful lives,” he said.
