Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park River Plains was a hive of activity today, with 7,000 people flocking from far and wide to bond and spend quality family time together at Singapore’s largest family picnic - U Picnic.
Organised by NTUC U Family, with NTUC FairPrice and NTUC FairPrice Foundation as main sponsors, the ‘Space Odyssey’ themed picnic featured a slew of exciting outer space activities and dazzling performances, encouraging families to look ahead to a positive future for themselves and their children.
The families were joined by special guests – Mr Seah Kian Peng, Chief Executive Officer, NTUC FairPrice, and Mr Desmond Choo, Director, NTUC Youth Development Unit – for Singapore’s largest family ‘wefie’, a highlight of the event.
Ms Toh Hwee Tin, Director, NTUC U Family, said, “NTUC U Family started U Picnic in 2012 to provide our union members’ families an opportunity to bond as a community, and we are not surprised that the event has grown so quickly over the years. U Picnic is an affordable option for families and offers unforgettable experiences, made possible with the strong support of NTUC FairPrice.”
“This time, we have 1,400 families, our largest turnout ever. Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park is spacious and people will be able to enjoy and move around comfortably. We are glad that these families take time out to bond, taking advantage of good weather which does not come often. On our end, we will continue to explore new ways to connect with our members’ families.”
Mr Desmond Choo, who is also the NTUC Champion for Women and Family, added, “Young families face bittersweet and significant challenges. At U Family, we support families to navigate the challenges together through events, workplace changes and advocacy for policy changes. U Picnic is an example of helping families bond while celebrating their successes. We hope that government and employers can continue to have families at the core of its policies for the long-term benefit of our nation.”
Mr Lum Hon Fye, General Manager of FairPrice Foundation, said: “We are happy to be able to continue playing our part in promoting family togetherness while also bringing people from all walks of life together through this fun and meaningful initiative by U Family. Amidst the hustle and bustle of modern day living, community events such as this remind us all to take a moment to appreciate and spend time with our loved ones.”
Besides picnicking amidst the restful green natural environment at the park, there was something for every family at U Picnic.
