Around 18,500 students from low-income families will be able to save the expenses of buying new textbooks, as NTUC FairPrice’s Share-A-Textbook gets underway.

On 8 December 2012, students under the priority scheme were invited to various collection centres to pick up the books before public distribution begins. By 9 am, some 500 beneficiaries were already queuing at Yio Chu Kang Secondary School to collect the textbooks. Primary to tertiary level books, including dictionaries and assessments books were available for collection.

This year, FairPrice saw a 30 per cent increase in requests for more textbooks from low-income families The Share-A-Textbook project, now into its 30th year, also exceeded its target of 350,000 textbooks since it first began in 1983.

NTUC FairPrice Corporate Communications Director Jonas Kor said the success of the project stemmed from the strong support of the community and supporting partners and the public as they continue to donate generously. “With the support we received, we have not only been able to help more students every year by making education less costly for them but also helped stretch the lifespan of textbooks and promote recycling,” Mr Kor explained.
