Instead of paying for your snacks in cash, would you pledge to do a good deed in return? NTUC FairPrice Foundation, the philanthropic arm of NTUC FairPrice, unveiled this novel idea at the launch of its first public education initiative titled `Do Good’ on 28 March 2013 at Plaza Singapura.
The campaign themed `Small Deeds. Big Differences.’ hopes to inspire youths to do good and improve the lives of people around them.
Gracing the occasion as Guest-of-Honour was Minister for Education Heng Swee Keat. Delivering his address, he said: “The ‘Do Good’ campaign allows our youth to proactively think for themselves what a ‘Good Deed’ is, and then act on it.”
Mr Heng also noted that the launch coincided with FairPrice Foundation’s fifth anniversary and extended his congratulations to the foundation for celebrating it in a “meaningful way”.
NTUC FairPrice Foundation Chairman Ng Ser Miang echoed similar sentiments and hoped the initiative would create a momentum, like the Kallang Wave, “to transform Singapore deed by deed into a gracious society.”
To spread the message, a roving pop-up store known as the `Giving Store’, will visit tertiary institutions across the island over the next few months.
Students will be able to pledge to do something good in return when taking a snack from the store. The positive act could range from lending a hand with chores at home to organising a fundraising activity in school to help the needy.
It seeks to remind youths that the collective strength of good deeds, no matter how small, can make a difference to someone’s day. Youths can share their experiences on the Do Good Facebook page or visit www.DoGood.sg.
