Speaking at the People’s Action Party (PAP) 36th Ordinary Party Conference, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong extended his appreciation to the Labour Movement for donating up to $3 million worth of NTUC FairPrice food vouchers for the needy.
The conference, held on 8 November 2020 at the NTUC Centre, was the first since the Singapore General Election in July 2020.
The sum of vouchers donated was more than double of the $1.2 million contributed in 2019.
“I'd like to thank Brother Chee Meng and Brother Kian Peng, and the NTUC and NTUC FairPrice team for generously stepping up and donating the food vouchers,” said the Mr Lee, who is also the PAP secretary-general.
Strengthening Ties
The Prime Minister also took the opportunity to reaffirm ties between the PAP and NTUC.
In fulfilling the PAP’s role to lead Singapore, Mr Lee said the PAP was fortunate to have a staunch ally in the form of the Labour Movement.
He mentioned that in times of crisis, it is vital to strengthen the symbiotic relationship between the party and the Labour Movement, so that they can work together to protect Singaporean workers and their families.
He said: “We should also recruit more union leaders to join the PAP and have more party activists in the union ranks, so that ties are kept warm and close at the working level, whether it's in the unions, or in the party branches.
“Then, the PAP and NTUC can continue to nurture our symbiotic relationship and groom new generations of activists, working hand in hand to take Singapore forward for more generations to come.”
Partnering Singaporeans
Mr Lee said that the PAP must continue to govern Singapore well, work the ground, stay accessible to voters, and lead by example.
He stated the party represents does not represent any special interest group or community, but all the people of Singapore.
“We have made life better for millions of Singaporeans. We will constantly pursue a more just and equal society. We are ever determined to walk alongside every Singaporean, striving towards a brighter future,” said Mr Lee.

The party also unveiled its new central executive committee at the conference.
