Channel for donations to help migrant worker
I refer to the letter “Fund for foreign workers” (The Straits Times, 5 Jun 2012). The Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC) would like to thank the writer for his suggestion. However, the MWC is in no position to compel all the migrant workers in Singapore to donate to the Migrant Workers’ Assistance Fund (MWAF) which was recently registered as a charity with the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports. As the MWC is a non-governmental organisation, it is also unable to have the government collect contributions to the MWAF from the migrant workers.
However, the MWC, a joint initiative of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) and Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF), is actively working with both NTUC and SNEF to seek donations from their member organisations and partners to assist the migrant workers who have made a significant contribution to our country’s development.
The MWC also strongly encourages migrant workers to help their less fortunate fellow colleagues who are in need of emergency assistance in shelter, food and medical care, by contributing to the MWAF. Such workers, members of the public and employers, especially those who hire migrant workers; may contribute to the MWAF by sending their cheques made payable to the “Migrant Workers’ Assistance Fund” to the Migrant Workers’ Centre at 62, Rangoon Road, Singapore 218352. Donors who wish to make cash donations may also drop by the centre which is open from 9am to 7pm on weekdays (except Mondays) and 11am to 3pm on weekends, or call: 6536-2692.
