The Singapore Industrial and Services Employees’ Union will work closely with StarHub’s management to ensure fair treatment and compensation package for the employees who have been affected by the company’s retrenchment exercise.

SISEU said this in a statement released following StarHub’s announcement on 3 October that it would be required to reduce its workforce due to a strategic transformation plan.

The retrenchment exercise will primarily affect non-customer facing roles, affecting some 300 full-time employees.

“Our immediate priority is to ensure that affected employees have a smooth transition to their next job. Together with NTUC’s e2i (Employment and Employability Institute), we will also work with our partners – Infocomm Media Development Authority and Workforce Singapore – to offer employment assistance such as in job searching, career coaching and employability training,” said SISEU.

StarHub also said that additional roles will be made redundant due to “ongoing natural attrition and tighter management of contractors.”

Supporting Those Affected

The company added that it will inform the affected employees by end October 2018 and will comply with statutory and regulatory requirements.

“We wish to recognise the extensive contribution that our impacted employees have made to the company’s past development and growth. Such decisions are never taken lightly. I am very aware of the impact on all our employees, and we are making every effort to support those impacted through this challenging transition.

“The redundancies are not an individual performance issue but one of strategic realignment of StarHub. We have been extremely fortunate to have many competent people in our team, but some positions are not sustainable given the current industry pressures,” said StarHub CEO Peter Kaliaropoulos (Peter K).

The exercise will cost StarHub approximately $25 million, which includes funding to support outplacement, training and coaching for affected employees.
