If you haven’t already noticed, technology is fast changing the way we live, work and even play. While the rate of industrial transformation differs from industry to industry, the Labour Movement is proactive in its efforts to help workers cope with the changes.

The latest of these efforts is ‘Embarking on Industry 4.0 through Smart Technologies’, the second edition of the EMPE (Electronics & Precision & Machinery Engineering) Month that kicked off on 8 October at the Devan Nair Institute for Employment and Employability. This was organised by NTUC’s EPME Cluster and NTUC’s e2i (Employment and Employability Institute).

Besides a month-long line-up of courses, workshops and training opportunities to help workers in the EPME industries stay abreast of industrial trends, a memorandum of understanding was signed between NTUC and Singapore Polytechnic (SP).

The agreement will see both parties work together to help identity future skills needed for workers to succeed in the future EPME industry, develop the necessary training and certification frameworks, and collaborate with companies in the sector on adopting new technology in the workplace. Some 1,000 workers are expected to benefit from this collaboration.

“NTUC is glad to help workers and companies better understand what exactly is Industry 4.0 and how they can capitalise on opportunities to move into higher value-added manufacturing. This collaboration is the first of a series of collaborations where you will see NTUC partnering different institutes of higher learning to bring learning and training closer to workers across Singapore, making it easier for them to upskill and upgrade,” said NTUC Assistant Secretary-General Melvin Yong.

“Today’s business landscape is moving at a rapid pace. As companies explore and embark on smart technologies to automate operations and processes to improve efficiency, it is important we do not leave out the workers. e2i will be working closely with NTUC EPME Cluster and our industry partners to strengthen the skills and competencies of the sector’s workforce so that they are equipped with critical and new skills to prepare them for the future of work as the manufacturing industry transforms,” added e2i CEO Gilbert Tan.
