Amidst the rising number of Zika cases in Singapore, the Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC) is moving fast to educate migrant workers on staying safe.

Representatives from MWC distributed flyers that provide key information on the virus’ symptoms and the preventive measures they can take. These include eliminating areas with stagnant water in their dormitories. The flyers come in four languages – English, Mandarin, Bengali and Tamil.

Speaking on the sidelines of an outreach session on 4 September 2016 at the Singapore Contractors Association Limited Recreation Centre, NTUC Assistant Secretary-General (ASG) and MWC Chairman Yeo Guat Kwang said that employers must also do their part in the fight against Zika.

Doing More

The MWC had previously held two outreach sessions per week to educate migrant workers on employment rights. The team will now be extending the sessions to three times weekly. These extended sessions will last till the end of October.

Beyond these sessions, ASG Yeo said they will be looking to provide equipment like repellents to further help migrant workers take care.

“We will also be trying to reach out for sponsors to see how we can get things like mosquito repellents and coils to distribute to all the workers. Employers should also take the initiative to support workers by providing them with these,” he added.
