Being an entrepreneur is not entirely about running a business. It is about risk-taking, being proactive, resourceful and more,” said NTUC Alignment Director (nEbO) Lim Eng Lee at the 10th edition of the annual nEbO Youth Entrepreneurship Symposium (YES) held at the National University of Singapore Business School on 14 June 2017.

nEbO is the junior membership arm of the Labour Movement that actively engages with youth between the ages of 12 and 25.

Learning Through Experience

Themed ‘Entrepreneurship as a Career’, the symposium saw more than 300 youths getting a first-hand taste of the hard work and passion that go into developing a successful business. The event featured dialogues with seasoned entrepreneurs and small-group engagements that allowed youths to come together with mentors to explore potential business ideas and hone their business acumen.

Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and Ministry of Trade and Industry, Sim Ann, who was guest of honour, said that it was crucial for youths to develop an entrepreneurial mindset in today’s challenging economic environment where globalisation and technological advancement pose new challenges.

She added that whether as a boss or an employee, the entrepreneurial mindset will enable youths to see and seize opportunities, adapt to challenges and learn from mistakes. Beyond talent and skills, youths should also possess grit.

Youth Feedback

Participant Brendon Pek, 20, shared that this year’s YES was an eye-opening experience as it brought together like-minded youths who want to make an impact in society through business.

Particular takeaways for him included insights from the ‘powerhouse’ speakers who had provided rare first-hand insights into their entrepreneurial struggles, tips on getting started and their personal approaches towards growing their businesses.
