“While other countries may react differently, in Singapore, we are taking pre-emptive steps to control the spread of the virus,” said NTUC Assistant Secretary-General Zainal Sapari.
Mr Zainal, together with representatives from the Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Employees’ Union (SMEEU) and the Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC), was at Dyna-Mac Engineering Services (Dyna-Mac) today to engage over 1,000 foreign workers, alleviating their concerns over the Covid-19 outbreak.
Dyna-Mac is an international design and construction enterprise for modules in the hydrocarbons industry. Their operations primarily occur within the marine engineering sector.
Mr Zainal stated that the congress was here for all workers, and that they could approach members of either the union or the MWC should they have any concerns regarding the outbreak.
Being Worried is Human
Addressing concerns of Singapore’s DORSCON status being changed from Yellow to Orange, Mr Zainal assured the workforce that these were precautionary measures, and not reflect that the situation in the country was critical.
He reassured the workers that being worried is only natural.
“When you are worried, it is good because you will take extra care for yourself,” he said.
He stated that not being worried would result in complacency, while being overly worried would only lead to individuals making irrational decisions.
Shortage of Masks
The current world shortage of masks has started to impact this sector as well. There were concerns raised by the workers that the masks that they used in their line of work were no longer being distributed.
Mr Sapari explained that the shortage was a global issue, and assured the workers in his speech that he would contact the Ministry of Manpower regarding the matter, and that he would do what he can to ensure that the workers will have access to the masks as soon as possible.
Keep Calm and Carry On
MWC Executive Director Bernard Menon said: “While there are pockets of migrant workers who are concerned, the majority of them are calm and have confidence that Singapore is taking all necessary precautions to contain the virus and protect the community.
“MWC will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation closely and stands committed to work with the relevant authorities and help any migrant worker who may be affected.”
Mr Zainal concluded to the crowd: “Remember to observe your personal hygiene. Wash your hands, see a doctor when you are sick and help to look out each other.
“Every worker matters and every job counts. Keep safe.”
