Cleaners will see their wages increase from next year, starting with a minimum of $1000 and moving upwards with skills upgrading and job redesign.
Second Minister for Environment and Water Resources Grace Fu announced in Parliament today that there will be mandatory licensing of all cleaning companies in 2014 and that the licensing will include the Progressive Wage Model (PWM) advocated by the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC).
NTUC Secretary-General Lim Swee Say responded to the announcement in his Facebook post, saying the good news meant cleaners would receive a minimum of $1000, moving upwards to $1200, $1400, $1600 and more with skills upgrading and job redesign.
He added that cleaners would also receive more cash and more CPF with enhancements to the Workfare Income Supplement (WIS) and with the support of the Wage Credit Scheme (WCS).
“In short, our approach of PWM+WIS+WTS (Workfare Training Scheme) is more than minimum wage for our cleaners and other low-wage workers as we roll out PWM to more job sectors,” he said.
