The Labour Movement has extended its appreciation to Health Minister Gan Kim Yong who will step down as the chairman of the Singapore Labour Foundation (SLF) Board on 9 June 2018, after almost eight years of service.
National Development Minister and Second Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong will succeed Mr Gan as chairman.
In a letter to Mr Gan dated 8 June 2018, NTUC said: “We express our sincere appreciation to you for your invaluable contributions towards our Labour Movement and our working people.
“As chairman of SLF, your keen vision and astute stewardship have forged a strong partnership between SLF and the Labour Movement as we worked towards enhancing working people’s lives in Singapore together.”
Mr Gan was first appointed to chair SLF on 3 September 2011.
During his term, Mr Gan steered SLF to better fulfil its purpose of supporting the development of the Labour Movement and enhance the lives of working people in Singapore.
Helping the Labour Movement Grow
Under Mr Gan, SLF restructured its portfolio of financial and strategic investments to sharpen its focus on its core role, diversify risks and streamline ownership structures.
The SLF also stepped up its support to the Labour Movement to help low-wage workers, develop union leaders, and strengthen industrial relations capabilities.
The support also included a 3:1 matching grant to the NTUC Endowment Fund that enabled the Labour Movement to scale up and sustain various leadership and membership initiatives.
Additionally, SLF contributes to the NTUC-U Care Fund annually to benefit low-wage union members and their families.
NTUC social enterprises also gained renewed support from the SLF under Mr Gan to enhance their competitiveness, sharpen their social mission and embark on productivity improvements to better help working people and Singaporeans.
