The Singapore Manual & Mercantile Workers’ Union (SMMWU) has crossed the 100,000-membership mark, becoming the first NTUC-affiliated union to do so.
This was revealed at the union’s Quadrennial Delegates’ Conference held on 28 March 2018 at the Marina Mandarin Hotel.
In his report, SMMWU Secretary-General David Yeo wrote: “The membership numbers are steadily growing … The [union’s] organising team had done so well, and I spurred them to remain focused on growing the membership both in breadth through unionising more companies and in-depth through increasing the numbers within existing branches. I applaud them for their efforts.”
SMMWU also announced at the conference that Minister for Education (Higher Learning) and Second Minister of Defence Ong Ye Kung will now be on its Council of Advisors.
Mr Ong used to serve in the Labour Movement and previously served as SMMWU’s Executive Secretary from December 2008 to October 2012.
The conference also saw The SMMWU elect a new executive council for its 2018-2022 term.
Eugene Teo, David Yeo and Goghari Siblisuraya will continue serving in the roles of president, secretary-general and general treasurer respectively.
Santha Raman from the Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore Branch will now take on the role of a vice-president. She was previously a council member.
New council members include Andrew Sim from Fuji Xerox Branch; Gurusamy Permalo from Singapore Zoological Gardens Branch; Chloe Wong from Sumitomo Corporation Asia & Oceania Branch; Lau Ong Ing from Cerebral Palsy Alliances Singapore Branch; Lim Sir Khiang from Tractors Singapore Branch; Oon Suan Keow Sheny from Mitsubishi Corporation Branch; Chandra Mohan Velu from E M Services Branch; and Chin Swee Tin and Josephine Tee from The SMMWU.
Chin Chiat Kheng from the British American Tobacco Branch will be joining the executive council as an internal auditor, while Baldev Singh from Changi Airport Group Branch and Phyliscia Goh from Itochu Singapore Branch will come onboard as trustees.
