SINGAPORE, 8 July 2011 – FairPrice Foundation will donate $1.35 million to NTUC U Care Fund through the Breadwinners – We Care, U Care campaign this year, above its initial target of $1 million. This will bring the Foundation’s total donation to NTUC U Care Fund to $2.35 million this year. The donation will help low-income workers and their families cope with the rising cost of living.

Mr Seah Kian Peng, CEO (Singapore), NTUC FairPrice said, “We are heartened by the overwhelming support from the community. This shows how we can work together to give back to the community and care for those in need. We thank our customers for stepping forward to be part of the Breadwinners – We Care, U Care campaign, and joining us in our appreciation towards breadwinners in Singapore. FairPrice will continue to do its part to give back to the community and engage our customers in giving back.”

The Breadwinners – We Care, U Care campaign was a joint initiative with NTUC-U Care Fund, to encourage the community to show their appreciation for breadwinners and to help low-income workers and their families cope with rising costs of living through the purchase of FairPrice housebrand bread. Through the Campaign, which ran from 22 June 2011 to 5 July 2011, FairPrice Foundation pledged to donate $5 to the NTUC U-Care Fund for every loaf of FairPrice housebrand bread purchased by customers at all its FairPrice stores, including FairPrice Xtra hypermarkets, FairPrice Finest, FairPrice Xpress at Esso petrol stations and Cheers convenience stores. Various Workers’ unions also participated by purchasing FairPrice housebrand bread in support of the Campaign. Close to 240,000 loaves of FairPrice housebrand bread were bought during the two-week period.

Mr Zainudin Nordin, Director of NTUC Care and Share said, “Our partnership with NTUC FairPrice demonstrates how working together can help us achieve a bigger impact for the community. Through the combined efforts of FairPrice and their customers, the donation of $1.35 million has enabled us to be one step closer to our $10 million target for this year.”

FairPrice Foundation has donated a total of $13.4 million to the NTUC-U Care Fund since the fund was set up in 2009. The NTUC-U Care Fund was established to consolidate the Labour Movement’s fundraising efforts to better the welfare of low-income union members and their families.

This year, the NTUC-U Care Fund seeks to help some 130,000 low income union workers and their families through assistance programmes such as discount vouchers for groceries, back-to-school vouchers, funding support for bursaries and scholarships and family recreational packages.

One of the main objectives of FairPrice Foundation is to help needy families meet their daily needs. Besides working with NTUC, FairPrice Foundation also partners with charities such as Society for the Physically Disabled, Food From The Heart, Community Chest and Boys’ Brigade, to reach out to families and individuals in need. Since the Foundation was launched in 2008, it has contributed over $28 million to the community.
