NTUC FairPrice Co-operative Limited has set its sight on collecting 350,000 textbooks to be distributed to some 16,000 and more students this year in its Share-A-Textbook Project.
Started 30 thirty years ago by NTUC FairPrice Co-operative Limited, the annual initiative has helped over 166,000 students save on textbook expenses over the years.
The public can donate their textbooks at all NTUC FairPrice supermarkets, NTUC FairPrice Finest and NTUC FairPrice Xtra outlets until 30 November 2012.
At the launch of the book donation drive and 30th year celebrations on 5 November 2012, NTUC FairPrice Chief Executive Officer (Singapore) Seah Kian Peng revealed that the project has collected over 2.4 million textbooks since 1983.
He also shared that the project had three key goals in mind: to lessen the financial burden on the low-income families, to promote the value of thrift and to encourage recycling to protect the environment.
“We may be now in the digital age but the growth in demand for textbooks is still very strong and the project continues to be relevant in serving the needs of our community.
“At the same time, we must not forget the dedication and support we have been receiving from the public and the volunteers all these years. They have been pivotal to the success of our Share-A-Textbook Project.”
This year, the co-operative is partnering with 109 organisations that will assist in logistics, promotional efforts, mass community collection, sorting and distribution.
Over 650 student volunteers and volunteers from the Supporting and Community Partners will also be participating.
The public distribution day will be on 9 December 2012 at Changkat Changi Secondary School, Yuan Ching Secondary School and Yio Chu Kang Secondary School.
