The Building Construction and Timber Industries Employees' Union (BATU) showed it cares recently when representatives visited the rented home of a union member who was killed instantly after being hit by a hijacked taxi.
BATU's Executive Secretary Zainal Sapari and Senior Industrial Relations Officer Raymond Ong headed down to Taman Selasa Jaya in Johor Bahru on 20 March 2012 to pay their respects and extend the union's assistance to the grieving family.
Mr Chandra Mogan, who was 34 and worked as a cleaning supervisor, passed away on 17 March 2012 at his place of work outside the Budget Terminal at Changi Airport after he was hit by a hijacked taxi.
He was an employee of Chye Thiam Maintenance Private Limited, and a union member of BATU since April 2011.
BATU extended to the family $2,000 from the BATU Special Assistance Fund and is also assisting the family to claim the NTUC Gift payout of $4,500.
NTUC Gift is a group insurance policy exclusively for members of NTUC. All union members 65 years and below are automatically covered against death, and total or permanent disability.
The union is also applying for the Singapore Labour Foundation (SLF) hardship grant of $1,000 for the family.
"We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of our union member Mr Chandra Mogan, who leaves behind his wife and four young children. Our hearts sincerely go out to them in their time of sorrow.
"BATU is working closely with the family members to provide emotional and financial support to the late Mr Chandra's family in their time of grief.
"We hope this will provide some relief and comfort to them during this difficult time," said BATU's Executive Secretary Zainal Sapari.
Mr Chandra, who was earning $900 a month, leaves behind his wife Madam Pusparani, who works as a cleaning supervisor at the airport, and four children aged nine, eight, five and two-and-half months old.
BATU will look into providing support in all ways it can for the family.
