Transport workers were also given a strong show of support on 15 February 2020 morning when Senior Minister of State for Transport Janil Puthucheary, National Transport Workers’ Union (NTWU) Executive Secretary Melvin Yong and Transport GPC chairman Sitoh Yih Pin visited Bedok Bus Interchange, Bedok MRT and Tanah Merah MRT stations.
“During my interactions with our public transport workers in recent weeks, it is clear that they have similar fears and concerns as everyone else regarding Covid-19. Many of them are at the frontline where they come in contact with thousands of commuters every day,” said Mr Yong.
Hearing their concerns, NTWU has been working closely with Land Transport Authority and public transport operators to communicate regularly on advisories, updates and clarifications relating to the coronavirus outbreak.
“In addition to the twice daily temperature taking, enhanced cleaning of the buses and trains has been introduced to give our workers an added assurance, especially our bus captains and the customer service officers on board the MRT trains,” he added.
To further boost workers’ morale, NTWU has plans to launch a campaign next week to seek community support and encouragement for frontline transport workers.
