2015 is a significant year for Singapore and the Labour Movement as we celebrate 50 years of our nation’s independence. This year, as we celebrate May Day, the Labour Movement pays tribute to workers, union members and tripartite partners for their contributions toward Singapore’s economic development and social progress.

In the spirit of an inclusive Labour Movement, we will celebrate May Day and SG50 with three of our key events – May Day Rally, Migrant Workers’ Centre May Day Celebrations and May Day Fiesta – all held on 1 May. A first for the Labour Movement, some 31,000 union leaders, key representatives from the Labour Movement, tripartite partners, members and migrant workers are expected to gather across six different locations in celebration.

May Day Rally 2015

More than 4,000 union leaders, key representatives from the Labour Movement and tripartite partners came together at the May Day Rally, held at The Star Performing Arts Centre, to reaffirm their commitment to solidarity. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong graced the Rally as Guest-of-Honour.

The May Day Rally 2015 commenced with NTUC Secretary-General Lim Swee Say’s opening address, followed by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s keynote address.

Commemorating 50 years of nation-building, a highlight for this year’s programme was the music revue performed by the Labour Movement’s very own 3-Gen (Generation) members. The music revue showcased how the Labour Movement – from NTUC’s birth in 1961 to present day – played a transformational role in Singapore’s economic development and social progress.

Performed by some 19 ordinary workers from Young NTUC’s affinity group p.L.a.Y, and members from nEbO and U Live communities, the music revue served as a tribute to our workers of all Collars, Ages and Nationalities.Driven by passion, the performers, aged 14 to 65, volunteered for the music revue and started rehearsals early this year as a show of their labour of love for our workers.

Migrant Workers’ Centre May Day Celebrations 2015

This evening, the Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC) will celebrate May Day with some 15,000 migrant workers across four different locations – Penjuru Recreation Centre (Main Event), Soon Lee Recreation Centre, Kaki Bukit Recreation Centre and Woodlands Recreation Centre. NTUC Assistant Secretary-General and Chairman of MWC Yeo Guat Kwang will join the migrant workers at Penjuru Recreation Centre for a night of entertainment.

The celebration aims to recognise our migrant workers as a dynamic and integral part of Singapore’s workforce, and extend appreciation and warmth to our migrant workers who are miles away from home.

May Day Fiesta 2015

For the first time, the May Day Fiesta will be held over three days from 1 to 3 May 2015, Friday to Sunday, from 5 pm – 12 midnight at the Universal Studios Singapore (USS), Resorts World Sentosa, so that more members can celebrate May Day together. It is anticipated that over the three days, some 35,000 union members and their friends and families will get to enjoy the exhilarating rides, fireworks and stage performances at the theme park, as well as interaction with the USS characters, with 12,000 members expected on the first day alone.

Throughout the May Day Fiesta, special guests NTUC Secretary-General Lim Swee Say, Deputy Secretaries-General Chan Chun Sing and Heng Chee How, and NTUC Central Committee members will celebrate May Day together with workers and members in appreciation of their hard work in building a vibrant economy and society as one people, for a brighter future for all.
