Do you have a passion for the aerospace industry and work with the latest technology in this sector?

Then the recently launched Aerospace Industry Transformation Map (ITM) is something you should be checking out.

Aimed at helping the aerospace sector to soar to even greater heights, Aerospace ITM was launched by Minister for Trade and Industry (Industry) S Iswaran on 18 January 2018 during the Seletar Aerospace Park’s 10th anniversary celebrations.

Some 1,000 new jobs are expected to be introduced into the sector by 2020.

ITM’s Key Thrusts

To prepare Singapore to capture growth opportunities in the aerospace, sector, several key thrusts have been identified.

They are:

- Equip Singaporeans with skills to take on new job opportunities in the sector with the help of the Skills Framework for the aerospace industry. The Skills Framework identifies 86 jobs like aircraft maintenance, fleet maintenance and manufacturing.

- There is the Professional Conversion Programme (PCP) to explore new opportunities in the industry. Some and 60 mid-career professionals, managers, executives and technicians have so far taken advantage of it to transit into new careers with the help of four existing PCPs in the aerospace industry.

- The industry also wants to reach out to more potential mid-career recruits. It has launched two new PCPs for Aerospace Officers and Aerospace Executives.

In all, there are now six PCPs for the aerospace sector and they are administered by the SIA Engineering Company and Temasek Polytechnic. Under the PCPs, workers undergo training for between 9 to 12 months.

Preparing Workers

Unions in the NTUC’s Aerospace and Aviation Cluster were involved in the ITM planning.

The general secretary of the SIA Engineering Company Engineers and Executive Union Ong Hwee Liang hopes workers will take advantage of the upskilling programmes offered by the ITM and improve their career opportunities.

Industry players like the Association of Aerospace Industries (Singapore) (AAIS) have also given their inputs on the ITM.

The association’s chief executive Sia Kheng Yock hopes the ITM’s skills framework plan will help prepare the much  needed local workforce for the booming sector.

Good To Know: Professional Conversion Programmes (PCPs).

PCPs are career conversion programmes targeted at Pprofessionals, Mmanagers, Eexecutives and Ttechnicians (PMETs).

They can undergo skills conversion and move into new occupations or sectors that have good prospects and opportunities for progression.
