NTUC’s PME (Professionals, Managers and Executives) Alignment Unit and the Education Services Union (ESU) conducted a legal primer on 4 October 2012 to help freelance adult educators understand their legal rights and obligations, in particular queries pertaining to intellectual property.
Some 60 educators attended the legal primer, 'Toolkit for the Freelance Adult Educator’, which was the third session in the Legal Primer for the Busy Executive series. The series is part of the Labour Movement’s efforts’ to equip to PMEs with knowledge of their workplace rights and obligations.
For the first time, a workshop was customised for freelance adult educators. This was in response to community members voicing their needs to understand their intellectual property rights and to better protect themselves when educational institutions engage their services.
At the event, ESU Executive Secretary Mr Ang Hin Kee addressed the audience and said such platforms provide opportunities for the professionals to network and share their experiences together. “Hence, we are partnering with the PME Alignment Unit to at least address this part concerning your legal rights and how do you go about improving your own protection,” said Mr Ang.
During the workshop, Managing Director of Gateway Law Corporation Mr Max Ng shared invaluable insights on intellectual property law as well as contractual rights and obligations of the freelance adult educators. The session also concluded with a panel discussion with NTUC Director of Legal Services Department and PME Alignment Unit, Mr Patrick Tay, Director of TSMP Law Corporation Mr Ian Lim and Mr Ng.
Mr Tay highlighted that the collaboration between ESU and the PME Alignment Unit was part of “our concerted efforts to build, develop and grow the PME communities in all our affiliated unions."
"This workshop aims to equip the members of our ESU's professional freelance adult educator community with the basic knowledge to protect themselves and their works and enhance their overall professionalism," added Mr Tay.
