It was an insightful study trip to Singapore for an over 40-member delegation from the City Hall of Kuala Lumpur Workers Union led by Deputy Chairman Zakariah Bin Abdullah held from 8 to 10 December 2011. The study trip was hosted by the Amalgamated Union of Public Daily Rated Workers (AUPDRW).
The 40-member delegation was a joint council consisting of three unions which were the Amalgamated National Union Local Authority Employees (ANULAE-Staff), Amalgamated National Union Local Authority Employees (ANULAE-IMG) and Kesatuan Pekerja-Pekerja DBKL (KPPDBKL).
The union paid visits to the National Environment Agency (NEA) where they gained insights on the works of NEA in maintaining environmental health as well as NTUC’s e2i (Employment and Employability Institute) where they toured the Jobs and Productivity gallery. They were also able to learn more about the institute and Singapore through a Question and Answer session hosted by e2i chairman Ong Ye Kung.
The study trip hosted by AUPDRW was a platform to learn about the current situation and future of environmental and services in Singapore. It also allowed both the exchange of views and create better understanding on how AUPDRW is responding to the changing environmental and services, dealing with challenges faced by workers and how the union is helping to improve the welfare of workers.
Shared KPPDBKL General Secretary Munian Appoo: “They’ve organised a very good trip, we’ve come to Singapore and we learned a lot… when we go back we will meet our mayor and we must tell what we learned here.”
Said AUPDRW General Secretary G Muthukumarasamy: “We both have benefitted in a way; we know that there are more jobs we can teach them through our institute here… they have also benefitted, when they go back to their country they have a certificate and when they show it, it is value for their country.”
