The Amalgamated Union of Public Daily Rated Workers (AUPDRW) wants to ensure its members are not left behind with the move towards a digital workplace of the future. For a start, the union will work with the National Environment Agency (NEA) to roll out a basic email and internet course under the NTUC UTAP Development Series 2017 for all its 540 members.
This was announced by AUPDRW President Subari Samuri at the AUPDRW Bursary Awards Presentation Ceremony on 25 February 2017. The union’s executive council will lead the way by being the first group to attend the pilot run of the course on 21 and 22 March 2017.
Referring to Budget 2017, Mr Subari said: “The Government is calling on all partners within society to prepare our workforce for the digital workplace of the future. If our members are not ready for this change, they will lose their value within the job market.”
He also urged members to ride on the SkillsFuture Credit to upgrade themselves.
In his speech, NEA CEO Ronnie Tay said: “Our daily-rated employees contribute greatly to safeguard the environment that we enjoy and in keeping Singapore clean and green. However, we know that we cannot simply rely on hard work alone to ensure a clean and sustainable environment for Singapore.
“As the economy slows down locally and globally, we have to strengthen our capabilities to create new opportunities. We need to learn new skills, become more productive in what we do, and continuously improve ourselves.”
The Bursary Awards
This year, AUPDRW gave out bursary awards to 38 of its members’ children. The awards cover primary to university levels.
Into its 25th year, the bursary awards this year was co-funded by the NTUC U Care Education Grant Co-funding Scheme and supported by NEA.
Addressing the award recipients, Mr Tay said: “Your achievements today will not be possible without the support and care from your parents who strive hard to provide you with a conducive environment for learning.
“Education has proven to be one of the most rewarding investments. With a good education, you will gain the knowledge and skills to contribute to Singapore’s future development.”
