From the time Sister Nora Kang, 60, was elected an NTUC Central Committee member in 1997 till she stepped down as NTUC Vice-President at the NTUC National Delegates Conference (NDC) 2015, there must have been many projects thrust upon her. But she has no particular pet project.

She explained: “Any project tasked to me during my Central Committee years from 1997 to date all evolved around members and the well-being of the Labour Movement. I have made it a point to contribute as much as I could.”

Stepping down from the Central Committee is also her way of contributing to the NTUC’s leadership succession efforts.

She has always contributed with a cheerful disposition ever since she became an Executive Council member of the Post Office Savings Bank Employees Union (POSBEU) in 1985 before becoming its General Secretary from 1991 to 1998.

Following her election to the NTUC Central Committee in 1997, POSB’s acquisition by Development Bank of Singapore (DBS) in 1998 put POSBEU under the umbrella of DBS Staff Union (DBSSU). Sister Nora became DBSSU President in 1999 and remains so today. In 2007, she became the first female to be elected NTUC Vice-President at the NTUC NDC that year.

Through the years, she has served in numerous committees, panels, councils and boards, including the National Wages Council and the Industrial Arbitration Court Employees Panel. She also NTUC Women’s Committee Chairperson.

“My philosophy has always been that we must provide a pair of caring hands for our members and must continue to work towards a good industrial relations relationship with management for the betterment of the company and members. The need to continuously groom and train young Exco members and future leaders has always been paramount to me.” - Nora Kang
