Organised by the Singapore Maritime Officers’ Union (SMOU) and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the inaugural Youth Maritime Forum was recently held at the National Gallery.
Themed 'Developing Youth of Today, Exploring Maritime of Tomorrow', the event served as a platform to spotlight the potential career opportunities in Singapore’s maritime industry and a chance to engage with industry players.
The forum was attended by more than 160 people, including cadets from SMOU’s Tripartite Nautical Training Award and Tripartite Engineering Training Award programmes, scholars from the Tripartite Maritime Scholarship Scheme and maritime students from the polytechnics and Institute of Technical Education campuses.
SINGAPOREAN CORE
“We want to create a strong Singaporean Maritime Core, and we want to acknowledge that there are quite a number of schemes and programmes in place to ensure that we grow this Singaporean Core. MPA recently announced during the recent Budget that they will set aside $12 million over two years to support new manpower schemes targeted at attracting and developing local talents like yourself in the maritime sector,” said NTUC Assistant Secretary-General Patrick Tay, who was guest-of-honour at the event.
“I applaud SMOU for taking a proactive approach to work with our tripartite partners and the industry to really bring this (type of youth engagements) and continuing to upgrade our maritime sector,” he added.
