In recognition of their significant contributions to the Labour Movement, this year’s May Day Dinner held on 29 April 2015 at Orchid Country Club saw 96 recipients receive the prestigious May Day Awards. The awards were presented in 10 different categories.

Recipients were made up of union leaders, companies and tripartite partners. According to NTUC’s May Day Awards Sub-Committee, these recipients have demonstrated their support to fellow workers in the areas of skills upgrading, workers’ welfare and promoting strong labour-management relations. The awardees have helped thousands of workers by supporting key Labour Movement initiatives such as the Progressive Wage Model, re-employment of older workers and other programmes that promote work-life balance, the sub-committee said.

This year’s highest award, the Distinguished Comrade of Labour, was given to the Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF) Immediate-Past President Stephen Lee for his role in strengthening strong tripartite relations between unions, the Government, and employers.

“With his [Mr Lee’s] enlightened leadership of the SNEF, the Labour Movement has been able to work with employers through many challenging periods to ensure win-win outcomes for both workers and company,” said NTUC President Diana Chia, in her opening address.

With Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Tharman Shanmugaratnam as Guest-of-Honour, some 1,600 guests comprising tripartite partners – trade unionists, senior government officials and management of companies - attended the dinner.
