General Election 2020 will see a total of 192 candidates from 11 parties contest for 93 seats in Parliament.
Out of the 192, 10 are from the Labour Movement.
Six are from NTUC’s leadership. They include NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng; Deputy Secretaries-General Heng Chee How and Koh Poh Koon; and Assistant Secretaries-General Patrick Tay, Melvin Yong and Desmond Choo.
The remaining four candidates lead various NTUC-related organisations and departments.
They are NTUC Enterprise Group CEO Seah Kian Peng; NTUC’s e2i (Employment and Employability Institute) Deputy CEO Gan Siow Huang; Centre for Domestic Employees (CDE) Executive Director Shamsul Kamar; and Director of the NTUC Operations and Mobilisation Division Secretariat Mohd Fahmi Aliman.
Both Ms Gan and Mr Fahmi joined the Labour Movement in April this year.
There will be no walk-over this election as all seats from the 17 group representation constituencies (GRCs), and 14 single-member constituencies (SMCs) will be contested.
The candidates filed their nomination papers on 30 June 2020 at the nine nomination centres in Singapore.
The 10 unionists will be contesting at the following GRCs and SMCs:
Ng Chee Meng – Sengkang GRC
Heng Chee How – Jalan Besar GRC
Koh Poh Koon, Desmond Choo – Tampines GRC
Patrick Tay – Pioneer SMC
Melvin Yong – Radin Mas SMC
Seah Kian Peng, Mohd Fahmi Aliman – Marine Parade GRC
Shamsul Kamar – Aljunied GRC
Gan Siow Huang – Marymount SMC
Two former Labour Members of Parliament will not be contesting in this year’s General Election.
They are NTUC Assistant Director-General Ang Hin Kee and NTUC Assistant Secretary-General Zainal Sapari.
Mr Ang was a former Member of Parliament for Ang Mo Kio GRC. Meanwhile, Mr Zainal was a former Member of Parliament for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC.
Campaigning will start today on 30 June 2020, till 8 July 2020.
Cooling off day will be on 9 July 2020, where all parties are to cease their campaigning exercises.
Singapore will cast their votes at the polls on 10 July 2020 between 8.00am to 8.00pm.
As this election takes place amid COVID-19, voters will be given a longer time frame to cast their votes.
Safe distancing rules and regulations will still apply.
