Knowing my rights as a working mother

Hi, I am a new mother of a healthy young daughter, and I would like to share with you how the U PME Centre helped me through a difficult time at my workplace.

Early last year, I was overjoyed to discover that I was pregnant. I had always enjoyed and felt fulfilled in my role as an office manager. , I applied for maternity leave to better look after myself and my newborn baby-to-be and it was approved. However, just before I was due to give birth, I was horrified when my boss called me up and fired me, claiming that company finances would not be able to support my salary. However, I found out from my other colleagues that they had recently hired another staff to take over my job!

It was a nightmare - I suffered a loss of income for 3 months during my confinement. This made household expenses tight and my husband was not drawing a high income. Thankfully, I was recommended by a friend to visit NTUC’s U PME Centre at One Marina Boulevard.

I spoke to the U PME Centre consultant and learnt that employers are not supposed to fire women on maternity leave, and they are supposed to allow for 8 weeks of paid leave. As such, the consultant immediately proceeded to take up my case. Within a period of 3 weeks, I received a cheque from my previous company on my maternity entitlement. This helped greatly with household finances and eased the strain on my husband and I.
